American dry snuff’s biggest user base was one that most people would not expect today. It was the most popular way that women would enjoy tobacco. But, they would use it a most unique was, orally! And it just wasn’t the aristocracy of American women who found “Dipping” tobacco enjoyable. Women from all walks of life were “Dipping” from the poor to the socialites on Park Avenue found a love of dry snuff. The way it was used was to take a moistened stick with the end softened and “dip” it into a tube of snuff. then, the user would rub the tobacco on their gums. In 1822 though, an enterprising tobacconist in Pittsburgh wanted to take the “dipping” tobacco to the next level so it could be used without the need of a dipping stick. |
