Rubbed on the gums |
|
George Weyman saw the need to take dry snuff to the next level and began experimenting with different ways to make dry snuff easier to use and after many failed attempts, hit on a formula that took dry snuff from the type of tobacco that was rubbed on the gums to one that the user could just place in the lip and get the same effect. What he did was to make the tobacco a bit coarser and added a small bit of liquid to make it easier to handle. He marketed his new moist smokeless tobacco as Copenhagen and began a brand that would stand the test of time to become the most recognizable brand name in the US. While the tobacco used in Copenhagen was the same as was used in dry snuff, nothing else was similar but, the term Dipping snuff stuck with it. Dip now is a completely different product than nasal snuff but, some manufacturers still call their moist smokeless tobacco “Snuff”. |
