High price

Back then, nasal snuff was primarily used by the American elite due to the high price for it. Before the US began producing it’s own type of dry snuff, it had to be imported from England which made it very expensive. In the 1790’s James Garrett, an American captain in the Revolutionary War, began producing snuff in a small mill in his home of Delaware. Levi Garrett dry snuff was one of the first trademarks ever in the states to be issues a patent and today, Levi Garrett is the oldest, continually used, trademark in the country. In the 1850’s, other American snuff companies began to manufacture dry snuff but, the user base was not the same as the one still using snuff imported from England.
